Affordable Flat Packs

Materials (Laminate vs. 2 Pac)

Choosing the right material for your kitchen cabinets is a key step in any renovation, as it affects both the style and cost of your project. Deciding early helps ensure your budget matches the finish and quality you want.

At Affordable Flat Packs, we offer durable paint finishes and high-quality laminate options. Paint finishes provide a smooth, seamless look, while laminate offers a versatile, easy-to-maintain surface with a wide range of colours and textures. Understanding these options makes it easier to create a kitchen that’s both practical and visually appealing.

Colour

The colour of your cabinetry plays a big role in defining your kitchen’s style. Laminate offers a wide range of options, including solid colours, woodgrain, stone, and marble effects, giving you plenty of ready-made choices from trusted brands. For more personalised options, paint finishes allow you to create a custom shade, giving you the flexibility to achieve the exact colour you want for your kitchen.

Finish and Texture

Laminate cabinets come in a variety of finishes, including matte, textured, semi-gloss, and high-gloss, with some options offering fingerprint-resistant surfaces. Painted finishes allow you to choose the exact level of sheen, from satin to gloss, giving you more control over the overall look.

Design and Profiling

Profiling adds architectural detail to cabinetry. Painted finishes can be routed and profiled to create styles like the Hamptons look, while standard laminate remains flat, though woodgrain laminates can provide subtle texture. Thermo-laminated vinyl can mimic profiles but is less durable in high-heat areas.

Durability

Laminate is hard-wearing and resists scratches and nicks, though imperfections cannot be repaired. Painted finishes may be softer but allow for touch-ups, helping maintain their appearance over time.

Cost Considerations

Painted cabinets are generally more expensive—around 40% higher than laminate—and profiled designs can increase costs further. Laminate offers a more affordable option without compromising on colour variety, making it ideal for flat-surfaced kitchens, while painted finishes give more flexibility for custom colours and detailed designs.

Benchtops and Cabinetry

We supply laminate benchtops only and manufacture custom cabinetry with either laminate or painted finishes. Cabinets are built from high-quality Australian HMR or MR MDF boards, with a wide range of colours and finishes from trusted brands such as Laminex, Polytec, and Formica.
