How to Check Measure Your Kitchen

Accurate space measurement is the foundational task in any kitchen renovation. This crucial step ensures you receive an accurate quote and guarantees your custom-made kitchen components are cut to fit perfectly. We’ve created this guide to simplify the process.

Getting Started

You will need: a tape measure, a pen, and paper for sketching and recording. A leveler is also beneficial for identifying any floor or wall inconsistencies that must be factored into your design.

Step 1: Measuring the Overall Space

Begin by capturing the primary dimensions of your kitchen:

  • Height & Width: Measure the space from floor to ceiling (Height) and from wall to wall (Width).
  • Window Clearance: Record the height from the floor to the base of the windows; this is essential for fitting benchtops and cabinets.
  • Utility Locations: Accurately note the positions of all power points, light switches, and service points (plumbing, electricity) on your layout sketch. These measurements provide a clear understanding of the room’s total dimensions and restrictions.

Step 2: Detailing Existing Cabinetry

If you have existing cabinets, you need to document their sizes, especially if maintaining the current layout:

  1. Layout Sketch: Draw a basic sketch of your kitchen layout, clearly marking the positions of existing appliances and windows.
  2. Cabinet Dimensions: Find the total depth and height of each installed cabinet. Note the height from the floor to the base of the cabinets.
  3. Kicks and Protrusions: Be sure to include the measurement of the ‘kicks’ (toe kicks) located between the floor and the cabinet base, as well as any other appendages like countertops and frameless doors.

Step 3: Measuring Appliances and Obstacles

All fixed objects must be measured to ensure your new cabinetry integrates seamlessly:

  • Appliance Dimensions: Measure the length, width, and depth of all major appliances (oven, sink, etc.) and fixed accessories built into the walls.
  • Recording: Transfer these precise measurements onto your sketch.

The Custom Advantage: Taking these detailed precautions addresses potential installation obstacles upfront. This is vital because a custom-made kitchen allows you to precisely control the heights, widths, and depths of every cabinet to perfectly suit your needs and space.
